Three Ways To Maintain A Healthy Transmission

Keeping your vehicle healthy in all aspects is important, but especially when it comes to one of the main components, which is the transmission. Not only is this because you want your vehicle to start up when you drive but also to save you money since transmission repair and replacements are extremely expensive. Here are three ways to help you maintain a healthy transmission that can last for the lifespan of your vehicle:

  1. Read the Owner's Manual: First off, you should understand your vehicle since all vehicles are going to vary in maintenance needs. This is where you are going to find out how often your vehicle needs maintenance performed on the transmission. Be sure that you mark when this is so that you don't miss it. You can leave a paper in your glove compartment stating at what mileage you next need to have the transmission looked at.
  2. Know the Basics of Transmission Maintenance: You should definitely know how to check the transmission fluid on your vehicle. You should know that the fluid should be red in color, so if it's not, you should have that looked into. Before this, though, you should actually know where the dipstick is so that you can check it. This would be under the hood of the vehicle and it should be easily noticeable. If not, you can check for that information in the owner's manual, as well or ask a mechanic. Be sure that you are checking the fluid every time you get gas just to be sure the levels and color are where it should be.
  3. Know What Transmission Problems Look Like: Finally, you should know what the beginning of transmission problems look like. This is important to ensure that you get it looked into before it becomes so bad that the entire transmission needs to be replaced. These signs include the temperature gauge on the dashboard indicating that the car is running hot, a burning smell, and any noises coming from the transmission. Be sure to schedule an appointment to get this checked out right away.

With these three actions taking a role in your day-to-day life, you can easily keep your transmission healthy, which helps you avoid costly repairs and replacement. Many times, the replacement costs can be so high that it's more worth it just to buy a new vehicle, so you definitely want to avoid this at all costs so you can get the most out of your vehicle's lifespan.
